Housing

19th November 2008

Since I was elected it has become clear to me that we, in the North Coast, have a real problem with the lack of sufficient social housing.

The new development on Moorburn Road is welcome, but it is less than 20 houses. We need more and we need a lot more.

So imagine my pleasure when, during a review of the Council’s estate, I realised that the courts behind the council housing at Lyndsay Crescent, Linn Avenue and Flatt Road might, just, be suitable for housing. There are problems with access, but these may be possible to overcome. I have asked housing to look at the sites and see if it is possible to provide a development plan for the sites.

Failing housing, I believe that the sites may be suitable for allotments, another much needed facility in the North Coast.

So labour controlled north Ayreshire Council have decided not to build afforedable housing in nelson street and to spend the £1M instead in Irvine – just like they have aalways spent our money their

Mr Gallagher has been very quite about this in the local rag – perhaps he hopes noone will notice the neglect of Largs in favour of his bosses in Irvine

Not very smart alex – particularly when you voted against affordable housing at Moorburn – how about some justise for the people in Largs who need s social housing

    Hello Brendon
If you are a constituent, please give ma a call or post your phone number (or email to agallagher@north-ayrshire.gov.uk) and I will phone you to discuss housing.

The problem with the Nelson Street site is that it is not possible to confirm ownership of the whole site.

If you don’t know who owns the land, you cannot build on it.

It’s unfortunate, but the situation is always under review. If ownership of the Neslson Street site can be confirmed, I will support providing social there.

If you can suggest any sites in Largs or surroundings for social housing I will certainly investigate the possibilities.

    Brendan,
I have made numerous suggestions on sites for social housing, in Largs in particular, but there were always problems of ownership or access or availability…or something!

The fact is, there is a genuine shortage of suitable sites, particularly in Largs.

Two weeks ago I looked at possible sites in Skelmorlie.

Last week I walked through Largs with housing and estates officers and some other possible sites were identified, which are now under inveswtigation by the housing development officer..

I was as disappointed as anyone that the Nelson Street site didn’t work out.

There is a new Local Plan in preparation, and housing land is a key component of the plan. I have made a number of suggestions that might free some land in future.

If you are aware of any parcel of land that could be developed for social housing I would be genuinely interested and more than willing to take it up with the appropriate council departments.

    Happy Christmas!
